Display options, and much better search-engine pages

v1.0.135Feature

Each visitor can choose full page width and whether people show as names, avatars or both. Crawlers also get real titles, links and structured data.

Display options

A new Display options button, in the header and in the menu on a phone, lets each visitor choose how the site looks to them. Choices are remembered per browser.

  • Page width: standard, or full width, which uses the whole window on wide screens.
  • People: show names, avatars, or both. An avatar is the person's primary photo. With avatars on, the people in a photo also appear on the photo itself, not only in its details.

We also fixed the header's account control (Log in, or the admin's avatar) overlapping the icon beside it on screens narrower than about 1700px.

Search engines

  • Untitled photos no longer all read "Untitled photo". Crawlers get a title, heading and image description built from who is in the photo, its first tags and the date it was taken.
  • Photo pages mention the people and albums, link their tags and albums, and carry keywords and the photographer in their structured data. Tag pages are titled "<tag> photos". The home page links to the biggest tags and uses the About bio as its description once one is written.
  • Search Console's URL Inspection and Rich Results Test, GoogleOther and Applebot now get the same pages as Googlebot. Before, testing a page in Search Console showed an empty page, not what Google's crawler is served.
